Process of design and developing Crafting the future Observatory

  • Post category:News

The Crafting the Future Observatory was born from a simple yet ambitious question: how can we anticipate and support the transformation of arts and crafts professions in a fast-changing world? Developed within the European MOSAIC project, the Observatory is a collaborative digital platform designed to monitor emerging trends, share knowledge, and support education, employment and entrepreneurship in the crafts sector.

The design process began with participatory workshops involving artisans, teachers, researchers and designers across Europe. Together, we explored future scenarios, mapped real needs, and imagined concrete tools. The result? A living platform combining a scientific journal, a business hub, and an e-learning space, all tailored to the diversity of craft practices.

This Observatory is not just a website — it is a resource for action, aiming to empower craft communities with accessible information, real-life stories, and forward-thinking ideas. Whether you’re a policymaker, educator, or cultural stakeholder, Crafting the Future offers insights and inspiration to rethink how we value, teach and sustain craftsmanship in Europe and beyond.

Designing the Future of Crafts: Behind the Scenes of the Crafting the Future Observatory

What does it take to imagine the future of arts and crafts in a rapidly evolving world? In the MOSAIC project, we believed that the answer had to be collective, inclusive, and forward-looking. This is the challenge that the Crafting the Future Observatory seeks to address — a challenge tackled not through top-down predictions, but through collaborative, field-driven exploration.

Launched within the European MOSAIC project, the Observatory is a digital platform designed to monitor, interpret and support transformations in the arts and crafts sector. Whether you’re an artisan, trainer, policymaker or cultural stakeholder, Crafting the Future offers tools, insights and inspiration to rethink how we sustain and value craftsmanship today.

A collaborative design journey

From the beginning, the Observatory was not conceived as a simple website, but as a living structure — one that evolves alongside the sector it serves. Its foundation was laid during a design thinking workshop held in Bologna in October 2023, where artisans, researchers, designers and vocational trainers within the MOSAIC project came together to envision the future of crafts.

Through co-creative methods and scenario planning, partners helped define what the platform should offer, how it should be used, and who it should serve. Their inputs shaped the Observatory’s three main pillars:

  • A Scientific Hub, focused on research;;
  • A Business Hub, offering practical resources and community exchange;
  • A Training section, providing accessible learning modules.

Three pillars, many entry points

Each part of the Observatory has been designed to meet the diverse needs of the arts and crafts ecosystem:

  • The Scientific Hub features two key areas:
    1. Research reports written by academic MOSAIC partners UJM and LAB, exploring digitalisation, inclusion, sustainability and innovation in crafts training.
    2. A Journal of Experts, collecting critical perspectives from educators, researchers and craft professionals.
  • The Business Hub is a space for knowledge sharing and networking. It includes:
    1. Share Your Experience, a collection of real-life stories from students, trainees and emerging artisans;
    2. The Resource Centre, with tools, guides and sector-specific materials;
    3. The Ambassadors’ Group, a growing community of craft leaders and changemakers. (Join here: MOSAIC Ambassadors on LinkedIn).
  • The Training Section hosts online learning modules developed by MOSAIC’s team. These courses, available via Moodle, support both teachers and learners in understanding key challenges like digital transformation and social inclusion in crafts education.

Tested by the field, improved with feedback

To ensure that the platform is useful and user-friendly, a large-scale testing phase was conducted by two project partners: CCI Dobrich (Bulgaria) and SCF (Italy). This phase combined an online questionnaire and several focus groups, including in France and Canada.

More than 185 feedbacks were collected, offering precious insights into how the platform is perceived and how it could be improved. Key takeaways include:

  • The importance of adding more concrete and sector-specific resources for artisans;
  • Suggestions to expand features like testimonials (with templates, photos and categories).

Rather than considering these critiques as obstacles, the MOSAIC team sees them as fuel for growth. Work is already underway to revise the platform based on this feedback, with responsibilities distributed among partners according to their expertise.

A living tool for a shared future

Crafting the Future is more than a digital interface. It’s a space of reflection, action and connection, built to help the arts and crafts sector adapt and thrive. It aims to bridge knowledge and practice, past and future, tradition and innovation.

We invite you not only to explore the Observatory — but to contribute to it. Share your story. Join the Ambassadors’ Group. Test a course. Send us your suggestions. The platform is what we make of it — together.

Because shaping the future of crafts is a shared responsibility. And it starts now.
