SUMMARY:From Waste to Wow!” – MOSAIC Craft Hackathon\, at the 47th WorldSkills Competition and Centres of Vocational Excellence (CoVE) Forum week\, in Lyon (France)
DESCRIPTION:Imagine a week where creativity\, sustainability\, and international collaboration converge in the heart of Lyon. \nFrom September 9th to 13th\, 2024\, in parallel with WorldSkills 47th competition\, and the  3rd Forum on Vocational Excellence 2024 (on which MOSAIC partners will also participate)\, SEPR will host the MOSAIC International Skills Performance (ISP)\, a groundbreaking event designed to inspire and elevate Vocational Education and Training (VET) students in the Arts and Crafts. \nThe MOSAIC ISP is part of Task 6.7 under MOSAIC Work Package 6 (Dissemination and Impact). Its goal is clear: to make Arts and Crafts professions more attractive to VET students\, while celebrating and promoting Vocational Excellence. And what better way to do this than through an exciting\, hands-on event that puts students’ skills into practice? \nAligned with the core mission of the MOSAIC project\, the ISP will bring together delegations from partner organisations. These delegations will include students\, teachers\, trainers and school staff\, totaling 34 students and 7 accompanying persons from MOSAIC VET partners coming from Armenia\, Canada\, Bulgaria\, France\, Finland and  Italy. \nTo ensure the highest quality of work\, the ISP will also feature guidance from 7 experts/mentors in various fields\, who will mentor the students providing invaluable insights and helping them bring their visions to life. \nHackathon\, doodle hand drawing team of programmers\, web developers\, managers and graphic designers develop software. Programming and coding concept. Workteam people create project and work with data.\n  \nThese experts/mentors\, brought to the ISP by other MOSAIC partners\,  include: \n\nHackathon Methodology Expert: Facilitating co-creative problem-solving and optimising collaboration.\nWelcoming and Event Management Expert: Ensuring a supportive and engaging atmosphere.\nCircular Economy and Sustainability Expert: Guiding eco-friendly practices and sustainable principles.\nDigital/Graphic Design Expert: Assisting in visualising concepts and crafting compelling presentations.\nJewellery Expert: Providing insights into upcycling techniques and innovative designs.\nProduct Design Expert: Mentoring in transforming recycled materials into functional\, aesthetically pleasing products.\nShoe-making Expert: Sharing expertise in sustainable shoe design.\nWoodworking Expert: Offering guidance on utilising reclaimed wood and modern/traditional woodworking techniques.\n\nOver five days\, participating students will engage in a series of activities designed to promote innovation\, teamwork\, and sustainability in an immersive hackathon-style format. They will work in diverse\, multicultural groups\, each supported by an accompanying person and guided by experts/mentors. The challenge? To create a mock-up object that is not only innovative and creative but also environmentally sustainable.  \n \nUsing recycled materials provided by SEPR\, as well as unique items brought from their home countries\, students will brainstorm\, design\, and build their projects. This hands-on experience will culminate in a public exhibition at Bellecour Square\, on September 13th\, where the students will showcase their creations and explain the concepts and processes behind their work. \nIn essence\, the MOSAIC International Skills Performance in Lyon promises a dynamic fusion of creativity\, sustainability\, and global cooperation. SUMMARY:Dialogues & Prospects - Arts & Craft and Design
DESCRIPTION:The European project MOSAIC\, led in France by the Société d’Enseignement Professionnelle du Rhône (SEPR) and the Université Jean Monnet de Saint-Etienne (UJM) and involving 7 countries and 15 partners\, is the initiative behind the Dialogues & Prospects conference\, with the support of the ECLLA laboratory and the 3LA doctoral school. Within these institutions\, discussions are taking place on art and design\, with a particular focus on the issues of sustainable transition\, economic and social development\, the funding of research and development\, and the transmission of know-how. While the first phase of the MOSAIC project mapped out the needs and difficulties encountered by the arts and crafts sector\, we now feel it would be worthwhile to explore these unique issues in greater depth.  \nAssociating craft and design might seem obvious. However\, in the common imagination\, they often appear as two different\, even alien\, fields. One is linked to an almost ‘outdated’ tradition (Dumas\, 2009 ; Jourdain\, 2014; )\, to a nostalgia for a job well done\, while the other is rooted in the contemporary world – the vocabulary being one of its hallmarks – and which\, from space to service\, from cuisine to sound\, knows almost no boundaries.  \nYet their histories seem to be linked. While the beginnings of design are linked to the industrialisation of Western countries – the date of 1851 being commonly accepted as the trigger for a process of reflection that was to develop\, articulate and structure itself over time – a large proportion of the creations of the time share this close relationship with singular know-how\, the idea of the hand\, a rejection of the machine\, production usually in very small quantities and a great deal of attention to the quality of materials and therefore of production. However\, the aims and intentions of design and craft are very different. The question of means and ends has been widely debated (de Held et al\, 2022). If\, in the current context of accelerated change in art and design craft practices (Pörtner et al.\, 2022; Morewedge et al.\, 2021)\, it is becoming increasingly difficult to separate the two fields\, questioning the place and role of each within the creative economy (Comunian et al.\, 2020; Horvath et al.\, 2020; Mignosa et al.\, 2019) is now essential to understanding its future. \nThe Conference “Dialogues & Prospects\, arts and crafts & design” aims to examine these two disciplines from two angles:  \n\nOn the principle of convergence around the notion of creation (Léchot-Hirt et al.\, 2010; Petts et al.\, 2008; Markowitz\, 1994);\nBased on the principle of cross-fertilisation of unique methods and our own thinking tools (Bappel\, 2021; Design Council\, 2019; Hummels et al.\, 2019).  \n\nArt and crafts in discussion with design provide food for thought on the challenges facing these sectors today (Brunet et al.\, 2023; Robra et al.\, 2023; Braunstein-Kriegel et al.\, 2019; Crawford\, 2009). Design can be a lever for thinking about the adaptation of arts and crafts in a changing ecosystem. It is then confronted with the problems faced by the crafts in terms of sustainability\, durability\, digitalisation and education\, among others. We propose to develop this discussion through three lines of research: the first explores the diversity that makes up the arts and crafts sector\, the second questions the various dimensions linked to the sustainability of craft businesses\, and the third looks at educational projects for the future of the sector. \nDownload the program >>

DESCRIPTION:Forum on Vocational Excellence 2023: Providing today’s talent with the skills to build a great tomorrow\nIn today’s rapidly evolving world\, it is imperative for education and training providers\, employers\, and governments to collaborate in ensuring that our workforce possesses the skills necessary to meet society’s ever-changing demands. This requires regular revision of curricula\, incorporating new skills such as digital and green skills\, and emphasising the importance of social and professional skills to navigate complex societal challenges. Additionally\, applied research and innovation in VET play a crucial role in sharing the latest developments with small and medium enterprises (SMEs)\, providing proof of concepts\, and driving the green and digital transition in our societies. \nAlthough this presents a significant challenge\, there are numerous inspiring examples of successful collaboration between VET providers\, the labor market\, and governments through Centers of Vocational Excellence (CoVEs). These collaborations co-create solutions that align with society’s needs\, offering high-quality education and training while providing additional services such as applied research\, innovation of professions\, and context-rich learning environments. \nThe Forum on Vocational Excellence (read our article here) serves as a platform to showcase these inspiring examples and bring together individuals involved in these initiatives. SUMMARY:Biennial International Conference for the Craft Sciences (BICCS)
DESCRIPTION:Between 20 and 22 of September 2023\, researchers from the University of Jean Monnet presented different aspects of the research conducted in the frame of the MOSAIC project at the Biennial International Conference for the Craft Sciences (BICCS)\, in Mariestad\, Sweden. \nA first presentation explored the innovative research methodology developed in the frame of the project and was presented in the Education panel. \nA second presentation looked at the findings of the research conducted on the topic of new social and economic business models and was presented in the frame of the Craft economies panel. \nThe event represents an important dissemination activity for MOSAIC\, insofar it facilitated the establishment of connections to relevant research and to other European projects on arts and crafts. The conference provides a platform for communicating craft research beyond the borders of faculties and disciplines. \nThe dissemination of the MOSAIC research results will take place at the Biennal/International conference for the craft sciences\, Mariestad/Sweden. UJM researchers will present two papers: \n\nMOSAIC: designing context-appropriate methodologies for mapping crafts skills (by Ruxandra Lupu & Bardin Christophe);\nDeveloping transdisciplinary methods for the assessment of new business models in the arts and crafts sector (by Pauline Kuntz).

SUMMARY:Italian Focus group on mapping skills needs
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday 24th of May 20223 a Focus group in the framework of Mosaic project took place with 6 Italian craft companies.  \nThe Focus group\, which was moderated by Stefano Lenzi (Unioncamere Emilia-Romagna) and Becky Riches (Materahub) aimed at having a direct feedback from business actors on skills gaps\, sustainability and social inclusion\, as well as at outlining the state of play concerning some relevant topics to develop excellence in VET\, with a specific reference to Craft SMEs.  \nThe six companies – an artistic craft studio\, an artisanal publishing company\, two restoration companies\, a printing company\, a free-lance ceramics artist – had the chance to discuss and reflect about topics related to 6 questions: \n – What does the word « competences » mean to you and your company ? \n – In a world which is constantly changing\, in what way are you making those competences evolve? Could you describe one in particular ?  \n– What is the share of informal education skills and competences coming from implicit knowledge that you need inside your business ? \n – Among 6 themes (sustainability\, social inclusion \, digitalization\, research & development\, new business models) which induce specific needs of competences; which ones seem most important for the future ?  \n– Imagine your company in 5 years; are you capable of anticipating the difficulties to come and the competences to implement to face those difficulties?  \n– By looking at those themes\, is there a domain where the competences seems to you more difficult to put together ? And what are those difficulties ?  \nThe exchange of views on these topics revealed various interesting and significant common opinions\, some of which can be summarized as follows: \n -a skill that will be increasingly required competence must run together with the word passion; \n – Digitalisation and Communication skills related to social media are of capital importance; \n – learning on the job and “soft skills” are also fundamental;  \n– social inclusion is the hardest skill to acquire \nThe focus group lasted about 2 hours
